What is The Churn?
A free, browser-based AI survival game. You are an ordinary person in a dying star-empire — not the hero, not the chosen one — and an AI decides what the world does to you.
An AI is the game master, not a dice engine
Most games resolve your actions with numbers and random rolls. The Churn resolves them with judgment. Each turn you write one intention in plain language — “beg a berth on a hauler,” “corner the loan shark,” “run for the airlock” — and an AI reasons out what would actually happen to this ordinary person, in this situation, and commits to it. There is no stat sheet to min-max and no luck to pray to. A careful, plausible act tends to work; a reckless or impossible one fails, and failure can cost you everything.
Permadeath, and no plot armor
You can be injured, robbed, captured, enslaved, or permanently killed. When you die, the world remembers how you fell, and then you begin again as someone new and ordinary. That finality is the whole point — it is what makes a cautious, lucky run feel earned instead of handed to you. Nothing rescues a bad decision.
A shared world that moves without you
The Churn is not a private sandbox. It is one living star-empire that other players share, and it turns on its own clock whether or not you act. Close the tab and the world grinds on — debts come due, rivals scheme, fleets move. Being away is dangerous, not a pause button.
Allies, deception, and the frontier
Add friends by a shareable code and your characters can meet as allies in the world — travel to the same hold, cross paths, watch each other on the chart. You can even show an ally the order you intend… or a decoy, while you do something else entirely. And the galaxy pulls outward: fortune, a ship of your own, and a name all wait past the empire’s protection, on a frontier that is as hungry as it is generous.
Who it’s for
If you like text adventures, interactive fiction, roguelike stakes, or the idea of an AI dungeon master that genuinely doesn’t take your side — and you want consequences that stick — the Churn is built for you. It is free, runs in your browser, and needs only an email to sign in.
